The nominees for the Sportsman of the Year will include Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe
Laureus World Sports Awards has announced Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce as one of the nominees for the Sportswoman of the Year award. This is the sixth time that Fraser-Pryce has been nominated for this award.
The Jamaican sprint legend has been shortlisted together with Spanish footballer player Alexia Putellas, Poland’s tennis player Iga Swiatek, US swimmer Katie Ledecky, US alphine skier Mikaela Shiffrin and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone; the US 400m hurdles superstar.
Fraser-Pryce had a spectacular 2022 season. She secured a fifth world 100m title win and a world-leading time of 10.62 in 100m races.
The Jamaican star has expressed gratitude towards sports journalists for nominating her for the award. Fraser-Pryce said that this nomination always feels special because the Laureus movement has many initiatives that promote “positive global change using sports.”
This award was won by Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah. She had dominated the Tokyo Olympics with 4x100m, 100m and 200m golds.
The nominees for the Sportsman of the Year will include Duplantis; a Swedish pole vault star who boasts of three world records in 2022.
Duplantis will face off against Formula One driver Max Verstappen, tennis star Rafael Nadal, NBA star Stephen Curry as well as football stars Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.
The winners will be announced in a couple of months.
