Gardner made an immediate impact, scoring a stunning goal in the 33rd minute to help Jamaica to a 3-0 victory.
Deon Burton was another player who played a crucial role in Jamaica’s victory over El Salvador in 1992. Born on October 25, 1976, in Nottingham, England, Burton began his football career with Portsmouth FC. He quickly established himself as a talented striker, and in 1997, he was signed by Derby County, a professional football club in England.
Burton’s time at Derby County was marked by several exceptional performances, and he quickly became a fan favorite at the club. He went on to make over 100 appearances for the club, scoring 24 goals in the process. Burton also had a successful career in the English lower leagues, playing for several clubs and scoring numerous goals.
In 2002, Burton was called up to Jamaica’s national team to play in a friendly against Trinidad and Tobago. He made an immediate impact, scoring a goal in the 19th minute to help Jamaica to a 2-0 victory. Burton went on to make 41 appearances for Jamaica’s national team, scoring 13 goals in the process.
Apart from football, February 23rd is also significant in Jamaica’s athletics history. On this day in 2008, Usain Bolt set a new world indoor record in the 200 metres at the NIA in Birmingham, England. Bolt completed the race in a time of 19.19 seconds, breaking the previous world indoor record of 19.92 seconds set by Frankie Fredericks in 1996.
