Netball Jamaica (NJ) has announced that they will bringing back their club leagues. This announcement comes at a time when the netball is recovering from the negative effects of COVID-19.
The leagues began their preparation with preliminary rounds in the National Stadium. According to Joan Benjamin, the Netball Jamaica leagues administrator, there will be a lot of games because of the many teams that will participate.
Benjamin revealed that they currently have 65 teams this year compared to the 31 teams that competed in 2022. She said that it is clear that the leagues were suffering from the effects of the pandemic. She revealed that they have teams from St Andrew, Kingston, Clarendon and St Catherine.
The preliminary rounds will feature 60 matches per week and they will run until May 20. There will be a total of 180 matches in a period of approximately three weeks.
Benjamin revealed that NJ is holding preliminary rounds because they need to place the teams in different divisions. The organizers will consider the teams’ ability when placing them into different groups.
The Minor and Major leagues are expected to begin on May 27. These leagues are sponsored by Supreme Ventures. On the other hand, the Intermediate League will start on June 3. The Intermediate League is under the sponsorship of Sunshine Cereals.
Benjamin said that they are expecting good competition although they reserve the right to change the number of teams playing in every league.
There will be 10 teams in the in the Major League while there will be 25 teams in the Minor League. Additionally, the intermediate league will feature between 28 to 30 teams. Elite players will be included in the senior teams.
