The Reggae Boyz produced a 3-2 upset win in their second-leg game versus Canada. The Jamaicans fought back to deliver their first-ever win on Canadian soil. This win has secured the Reggae Boyz’s spot in Copa America 2024 and the semifinal of the CONCACAF Nations League.
Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies provided Canada with the first goal in the 25th minute. The goal came after Richie Laryea delivered a cross in the Jamaican box. Davies arrived in the box and proceeded to score a simple tap-in goal.
Jamaica fought back through striker Shamar Nicholson who produced two goals in 4 minutes. Damion Lowe delivered a beautiful pass that found Nicholson in the opposition box. He produced a ferocious shot that left the Canadian goalkeeper for dead. This goal happened in the 62nd minute. He then scored a tap-in that went through the goalkeeper’s leg in the 66th minute.
The Canadians fought back with an immediate goal that was scored by Watford midfielder Ismaël Koné. Kone headed the ball into the back of the net after Davies delivered an inch-perfect corner kick in the 69th minute.
The Jamaicans refused to go down without a fight and they kept putting pressure on the Canadian defenders. This pressure paid off when the Boyz won a penalty in the latter stages of the game. Fulham attacker Bobby De Cordova-Reid stepped forward and scored from the penalty spot in the 78th minute. This goal was enough to ensure Jamaica went home with a win. There was an unfortunate event in the 84th minute after Demarai Gray kicked the ball out of play. This incidence saw the Jamaican forward receive a red card.
The two teams now have an aggregate score of 4-4 after the first-leg game ended with a 2-1 win for Canada.
The Canadians will have to secure a win against Trinidad and Tobago to reach the 2024 Copa America tournament. This is a one-off playoff game that will take place in March in the U.S.
