The Jamaicans will have to win against Guatemala in order to keep their hopes of reaching the 2024 Women’s CONCACAF Gold Cup alive
The Reggae Girlz came in with a much changed squad, for a third straight game, when they faced off against Panama. The match ended in a 1-1 draw as the Jamaicans fought for a position in the 2023 Gold Cup. The Girlz came in hoping to deliver another gutsy performance, like they have done in their last two matches.
Panama began the first half by bossing possession but the Jamaicans managed to remain in the game. The Panamanians also looked dangerous on the counter attack. Panama won a controversial penalty in the middle of the first half. Their efforts were rewarded after causing a lot chaos in the Reggae Girlz box. Marta Cox stepped up and scored from the penalty spot help Panama grab the lead in the 31st minute. The Girlz must have felt unfortunate because they didn’t concede from any intricate or creative play.
The Reggae Girlz came alive after they conceded the goal. They began to press the Panamanians relentlessly. This pressure caused the Panamanians defenders to begin making mistakes. They were rewarded for their hard work and they got their well-deserved goal in the 45th minute. The goal came from a brilliantly worked move that began in the left-hand side.
Shaneil Shellicia Buckley produced a powerful volley that ended up in the back of the Panamanian net. The chance was created by a fabulous cross that was delivered by Malikae Dayes. The brilliant Dayes was back to haunt her nation of birth. The two teams went into the half-time break on level terms.
The two teams continued creating goal-scoring opportunities in the second half. However, the two rivals were engaged in a much-tighter second half and neither team could find the finishing touch. The Reggae Girlz created more clear-cut chances but they lacked a lethal goal-scorer to finish them off. The JFF must have been wishing that they had Khadijah Shaw, who is a renown goal scorer.
The Panamanian players worked hard to secure a draw after they realized that Jamaica was the stronger team. They survived an onslaught as the Jamaicans launched one attack after another in the closing minutes.
The Jamaicans will have to win against Guatemala in order to keep their hopes of reaching the 2024 Women’s CONCACAF Gold Cup alive. This will be their last match of the group.
