Manchester City began the game as the stronger team with Chelsea allowing them to control the lion’s share of the possession. Khadija Shaw got the first glimpses at goal in the early part of the first half. The Jamaican striker hit the sidenetting in the 4th minute and missed a header a few minutes later.
However, Chelsea reclaimed the momentum and James grabbed an opener in the eighth minute. The goal was created after Manchester City goalkeeper Khiara Keating made a terrible pass towards her defenders. Erin Cuthbert pounced on the loose pass and found Mayra Ramirez. The Colombian striker dribbled past one player before laying off the ball to James. James produced a powerful shot that was deflected past the hapless Khiara Keating.
Shaw got three more chances to score but the score-line didn’t change moving into halftime.
Chelsea got another chance to score through Ramirez but her effort was cleared by Greenwood. City continued to dominate the possession and creating chances for Shaw. However, she failed to convert any of her opportunities. City threw the kitchen sink at Chelsea in the second half but it wasn’t enough to win the match.
Emma Hayes, the Chelsea head coach, told journalists that she was glad that her team executed her game plan. She set up her team to defend deep and catch Manchester City on the break. City enjoyed majority of the possession but ultimately Chelsea didn’t allow them to get on the scoresheet. Emma Hayes made tactical adjustments that City coach Gareth Taylor couldn’t cope with.
