There will be a reward of US$50,000 for athletes who win a gold medal. On the other hand, the relay gold medalists will share US$50,000 among themselves
World Athletics has promised to reward Olympic gold medalists with monetary rewards. The Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association has approved payments that are meant for athletes during the upcoming Olympic games. This proposal was approved by Glen Mills; an acclaimed track and field coach as well as JAAA president Garth Gayle.
According to World Athletics, the payments are meant for track and field athletes who win medals in the Paris Olympics. The athletes will be competing in 48 different disciplines. There will be a reward of US$50,000 for athletes who win a gold medal. On the other hand, the relay gold medalists will share US$50,000 among themselves.
This year’s Olympic Games will run between July 26 to 11th Aug 2024.
World Athletics confirmed that they will award prize monies to bronze and silver medalists in the 2028 Olympic Games. This tournament will happen in Los Angeles, USA.
Garth Gayle said that appreciates that JAAA is trying to bring the best out of track and field athletes. He believes that these new incentives will help in the growth of athletes on and off the track.
On the other hand, Mills had mixed emotions about the new proposal. He said that he was happy with the new development although he wishes that that it was adopted earlier. He is one of the officials who have been calling for this bonuses over the years. He believes that World Athletics should reward all finalists and not just the winners. He believes that the athletes have a right to demand a bigger chunk of what the Olympic Games have been making. This is because the organizers have been making a lot of money from the games.
These new bonuses also received an approval from Christopher Samuda; the president of the Jamaica Olympic Association. He emphasized that JOA will offer support for all the World Athletics plans that benefit athletes.
Samuda highlighted the necessity of educating athletes about the principles and virtues that transcend monetary pursuits. They should learn economic literacy and embrace values of humanity, embodying the essence of Olympism.
