Clunis Locked Out Of The Jamaican Olympic Team

The JAAA said that they are “trying their best” to get Clunis back into the team

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has blocked Jamaica’s Nayoka Clunis from participating in this year’s Olympic Games. The CAS is an international court that solves disputes relating to athletes and their governing bodies.
The Hammer Thower had filed an appeal in which she accused the Jamaica Athletic Administrative Association of ignoring her messages. Her case was filed by attorneys Sayeed Bernard and Dr Emir Crowne.
Clunis had earned a spot in the Olympic team after finishing as one of the best 32 athletes. However, her name was omitted from the final list after the JAAA made an administrative blunder. They are hoping to submit Clunis’s name to World Athletics.
The court dismissed the case because the matter was filed “without any regard for the jurisdiction of the ad hoc division”.
The CAS panel said that they can’t listen to the case because it isn’t within their jurisdiction. This is because the problem happened outside the 10 days window for issues to do with Olympic Games.
Jamaica has never been represented in the Women’s Hammer Throw event. Clunis was hoping to be the first one to do this in the Olympics.
World Athletics, the International Olympic Committee and the Jamaica Olympic Association sent representatives to the hearing. They were involved as interested parties.
The JAAA said that they are “trying their best” to get Clunis back into the team. They want the track and field authorities to allow the hammer thrower to compete in the Olympics.
The JAAA claimed that Hurricane Beryl caused a loss in electricity. This resulted in internet shortage and that’s why they couldn’t submit Clunis’ name.
