The Jamaican winger contributed to what will go down as legendary night against the European giants
Leon Bailey was one of the Aston Villa players who produced a memorable performance to defeat Bayern Munich. Before the game, he said that he believes that they can send a strong message to their other opponents by beating the six-time winners. The two teams were competing in a group-stage game in the Champions League.
The Jamaican winger wasn’t in the first 11 squad but he was introduced in the 27th minute after Jacob Ramsey picked up an injury. He created several chances but Ollie Watkins wasn’t sharp enough to convert them.
The first half was dominated by Bayern Munich who enjoyed the lion’s share of the possession. Michael Olise was creating many problems for the Aston Villa goalkeeper but the half ended in a goalless draw.
Bayern Munich continued to control the tempo of the game and the Villa forwards struggled to get into the game. It wasn’t surprising that coach Unai Emery decided to substitute Leon Bailey in the 60th minute. He was replaced by Ian Maatsen.
The German team was clearly the better team but their attackers had decided to leave their scoring boots at home. In addition to this, the Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez was having a good game.
Serge Gnabry, Michael Olise and Harry Kane saw their efforts saved by the world-cup winning goalkeeper. This was all before Aston Villa introduced striker Jhon Duran as a second half substitute.
The Colombian striker scored in the 79th minute to put Aston Villa in front. The English team defended resolutely to ensure that the game ended as a 1-0 win.
The champions league is the biggest competition in Europe and that’s why Bailey and his teammates were excited. Villa hasn’t qualified for this competition in at least four decades. Bayern Munich was the biggest club to play in Villa Park in years.
“We want to be known as a team that always competes against the biggest teams in the world. Our fans normally create a wonderful environment at Villa Park. We need to show our quality and power,” said Bailey.
Bailey was one of Aston Villa’s best players in the last season thanks to his 10 goals and 9 assists in the English premiere league.
The Birmingham-based club is currently sitting in the 5th position in the English premiere league.
