The Reggae Boyz were recently defeated by the United States in a game that ended in a 1-0 score-line. The two teams were competing in the quarterfinal of the Concacaf Nations League.
This was a disappointing result for the Jamaican team although they were forced to play with 10 men.
The Jamaicans came in with a game plan of pressing their opponent’s defenders. They caused the USMNT some problems but they were not rewarded with a goal. Their momentum was killed when the United States scored scored an early goal. The goal was scored by Ricardo Pepi in the fifth minute.
The game was played in Jamaica’s National Stadium. The two teams will meet in a second leg that will happen on Monday in the USA.
The Jamaicans kept fighting and they even created several chances. However, they failed to show ruthlessness in front of goal. Their best chance came when Shamar Nicholson won a penalty in the 14th minute. Nicholson was fouled by goalkeeper Matt Turner. The 6’4 striker was brought down after he powered past the USMNT defenders. Demarai Gray stepped up to take the spot kick but he saw his effort get saved by Turner.
The Reggae Boyz played better in the second half but their efforts weren’t rewarded with any goals.
Things got worse for the Jamaicans when the referee showed Mason Holgate a red card in the 86th minute. He was punished for kicking Gianluca Busio. This was the second yellow card for the Jamaican defender.
This is the first time that Steve McClaren has lost a match as the head coach of the Jamaican national team.
On the other hand, this is the first time that coach Mauricio Pochettino has won a competitive match for the the Americans.
