Earlier, journalists had reported that Adidas had also tried to hijack the deal
Puma has renewed it’s partnership with the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association. The German sporting gear brand has been sponsoring Jamaican athletes for the last few years.
Earlier, journalists had reported that Adidas had also tried to hijack the deal. They had unsuccessfully tried to approach the JAAA. They made this offer after Puma’s deal had expired.
Garth Gayle; the president of the JAAA, said that they chose Adidas because they offered a better deal than their competitors. However, he did not reveal how much the association received from Puma.
Gayle was speaking at Jamaica College during the association’s annual general meeting. Gayle had just retained his seat as the president of JAAA, along with his executives.
Gayle thanked Puma for providing unwavering support to both professional and grassroot athletes. The company has sponsored the boys’ & girls’ championships, national events like the Gibson Relays and high school events. The company also provided financial aid during the pandemic.
The JAAA believes that this new deal will ensure that they can continue providing support to athletes. The association believes that this is the best way to maintain their mission of excellence.
Some local journalists revealed that Adidas had offered a deal worth more than US$40 million to last between 2025 and 2032. In 2013, they reportedly made another offer that was worth US$26,000,000.
This offer came with an “annual retainer of US$2.5 million” that was part of a US$3 million budget. The deal would also have included products worth US$2.13 million per year.
