Kirani James; the first Olympic medalist in Grenada, has received an honorary degree that recognizes him as a Doctor of Law. He received this degree from The University of the West Indies. This certificate is meant to celebrate his excellence in athletics.
The event was conducted with the blessings of the governor general of Grenada; Dame Cécile La Grenade. She is also the patron of university. The graduation ceremony was conducted via a virtual medium.
The 32-year-old James revealed that it was an honor to be recognized by the University of the West Indies.
“I’ve been humbled by the occasion. I have always wanted to be one of the best athletes in the world. I remember asking God to help me uplift myself and my family when I became a professional athlete. I am happy that God has given me an opportunity,” James said.
“I know that most people don’t get an opportunity like mine. I don’t take anything for granted. This opportunity is bigger than myself. God is using me as an example of what can be achieved when we reach our full potential. This is all part of the bigger picture.”
James has built a reputation as one of the world’s greatest 400 metre runners. He is among the 11 athletes who have won junior, youth and senior level World Championships.
He stormed to victory during the 2012 Olympic Games. This went down in history as his country’s first-ever gold medal in the games.
James also emerged as the winner in the 2011 Daegu World Championships and the Commonwealth Games that happened in Glasgow. At one point, he was recognized as the best athlete in the 400 metres.
Additionally, he also brags of a silver medal that was acquired in the 2016 Brazil Olympics.
He also went home with a bronze medal that he earned while competing in the 2020 Olympics.
He won gold when he was a student athlete who competed in the 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 Carifta Games. He dominated the 2007 Commonwealth Youth Games with another gold medal that was clichéd in the 400 metres race. He also clinched silver in the 2008 World Junior Championships and the 2007 World Youth Championships.
