The head coach has been in constant communication with the English-born striker who is close to playing for Jamaica
Steve McClaren; the Reggae Boyz Head Coach, has said that he can’t wait for Mason Greenwood to wear the Jamaican colors. The coach revealed that he has had numerous conversations with the English-born striker as well as some of his relatives.
McClaren is hoping that the striker will be ready to represent the Jamaican national team later this year. The team will be involved in World Cup Qualifiers during that part of the year.
Greenwood, 23, has only recorded one cap for the England senior team. This cap came when he was introduced as a substitute in a match against Iceland.
According to FIFA rules, Greenwood is allowed to play for the Jamaican national team because his father was born in Jamaica.
McClaren and Greenwood have a good working relationship because they were at Manchester United during the same time. According to sources, the Jamaican Football Federation has completed most of the paperwork. The Jamaican authorities are only waiting for Greenwood’s family to sign one final document.
McClaren said, “Mason and his family know that they are wanted in the Jamaican camp. This is what I have been telling every time I have spoken to them. He can help us qualify for the World Cup.”
Greenwood has been Marseille’s best player and therefore it isn’t surprising that he has been their top scorer with 13 goals. He also boasts of three assists. Only PSG’s Ousmane Dembélé has more goals in the French Ligue.
McClaren also revealed that Michail Antonio might be set for an early summer return. This would be an impressive comeback considering the West Ham striker was involved in a car crash that left him with a lower-limb fracture.
“Antonio is recovering well from the injury he suffered in the December 7 car crash. We have been communicating with him throughout this period. He might be set for a summer return,” he said.
The English-born striker has been one of the Reggae Boyz’s best players. He’s registered five goals in 21 caps since he switched to Jamaica in 2021. The explosive forward boasts of being West Ham’s all-time leading scorer in the Premier League. He has registered 68 goals in 268 matches.
McClaren said that the number nine position is the most important part of his team. He is hoping to discover a goal scoring striker from the Jamaican premier league. The local players will get a chance to impress the coach when the Boyz play friendly games versus Trinidad and Tobago. The first match will be at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Thursday. The second one will happen on Sunday, it will be hosted by the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
