In the finals, they registered two losses, six draws and 16 wins across four boards
The National High Schools Chess Championships has just been concluded. The champions of the 2025 edition are WOLMERS’ Boys’ ‘A’ team. The competition; which was held at Calabar High School, was composed of two days and six rounds.
Wolmers’ scored 20 wins from 20 games to ensure that they dominated the preliminary stages of the competition. In the finals, they registered two losses, six draws and 16 wins across four boards.
The second position was taken Campion College ‘A’ who came in as the defending champions. St Catherine High School ‘A’ took the third position. St Jago High school ‘A’ took the fourth position while Manning’s ‘A’ completed the top five.
The award for the best all girls team went to the St Jago High School ladies’ team. They won this award because they reached the national finals. The finals were composed of 24 teams, with St. Jago finishing in the 22nd position. The regional team awards were won by Campion College, St Jago High School, Green Island High School and Titchfield High School who represent the Northeast.
Individual awards were collected by Corbin Harvey of Wolmer’s Boys’ School for board two, Jaden Shaw of Wolmer’s Boys’ School for board one, Brian Thompson for board three and Khatroy Cato for board four. Aaron McKoy of Campion College went home with the top reserve award.
FM Jaden Shaw; who is the team captain for Wolmer’s Boys said, ‘’we have been supporting each other from the first day we met. We have been working as a unit all season. There are no individuals.” He said that this win is dedicated to the members of the Wolmer’s schools community. This community will be celebrating their 296th anniversary in two months.
The National High School Championships is an annual competition that is organized by the Jamaica Chess Federation. The event is made up of 70 schools that are normally divided in six zones. The grand finals is contest between the top two teams. Additionally, there is a play-off for the other 12 teams.
