Mason Greenwood is set to become a Jamaican player after he sent a formal request to switch his nationality.

This means that he can no longer play for the England national team. This news was released by Mark Bullingham; the chief executive of the Football Association (FA).

The last time that he played for the England national team was in 2020 when he debuted against Iceland. FIFA allows players to switch their national teams if they are below 21 years. However, they must also meet eligibility requirements of the country they want to play for.

“It has come to my attention that Greenwood has sent a formal application that will allow him to play for the Reggae Boyz. He will not be able to play for England again because footballers are only allowed to switch once,” said Bullingham.

Manchester United sold the 23-year-old striker to Marseille in the last transfer window. The English club received a fee of €27.6 million. He is one of the leading goal-scorers in the French Ligue 1 after registering 15 goals in 24 matches.

Manchester United got rid of him after he was accused of assaulting his girlfriend. He was also accused of coercive control and attempted rape. He was also kicked out of the England national team because of the same reasons. However, it’s important to note that the authorities dropped all the charges. The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service revealed that they dropped the charges because of lack of evidence and the withdrawal of key witnesses.

The Jamaican Football Federation has been working on recruiting Greenwood for the past one year. He will be one of the many England-born players who play for the Reggae Boyz. He will work under the leadership of Steve McClaren; the current head coach of the Jamaican national team. McClaren was one of the coaches when Greenwood was at Manchester United.
