Winger Leon Bailey was the talk of town when he gave Aston Villa a 3-0 win against Everton last weekend at Villa Park. The 24-year-old Jamaican football icon caught everyone’s attention again after Saturday’s match. Bailey came in as a sub replacing Matt Targett after the pretty dull first half. Barely five minutes into the game, Bailey managed to liven up the game with his first goal, giving Everton fans sleepless nights due to their frustration. Villa opened the scoring through a sublime finish by Matty Cash in the 66th minute. Bailey came in and assisted a own goal by Digne from a direct corner kick in the 69th minute before finishing the job with a powerful left-footed shot in the 75th minute.
Unfortunately, he only played for 22 minutes before he was replaced because of an injury he sustained after scoring the third goal for his club. Bailey thinks that the injury may have been caused by shooting the ball a little too hard. However, he believes that it is nothing serious. He become the second villa player after Julian Joachim v Derby, September 2000 to be subbed off minutes after being subbed in. This was the second big win for the Villa this season. Bailey is expected to miss Wednesday’s Carabao Cup game as a precautionary measure.
Everton was missing key players like Dominick Calvert Lewin, Richarlison and Jordan Pickford but Villa will not care about that because they got all three points from that game. Last Saturday’s match means that Villa now holds the 10th position with seven points in the premier league. On the other hand, Everton under their new manager Rafael Benitez holds the fifth position after last week’s 3-1 victory over Burnley. Aston Villa have proven to be unbeatable during their last five home games in the premier league (W3 D2).
Villa boss Dean Smith believes that Bailey is worth every dime they paid for him in his £25m transfer from Bayer Leverkusen. He has had 4 goals and 3 assists in the last seven games he has played. His elite dribbling and finishing skills gave a turn to events in an otherwise boring game, even though it was for twenty-one minutes only. Bailey later on said that his boss Smith had advised him to cut in from the left side of the pitch in order to be effective. The Jamaican international described the game as “The perfect night”.
Boss Smith is certain that they have the best talent that could will guide them in the coming matches. Leon who is a modern winger offers technical ability, ambition and versatility that will benefit Aston Villa for years to come. Aston Villa will go head-to-head against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Manchester United on 25th September. Fans will be in attendance in Villa Park home ground which holds a capacity of 42,785.
