West Ham United upset Premier League leaders Chelsea with a 3-2 victory Saturday, coming back from two goals down twice to grab all three points thanks to a remarkable late strike from replacement defender Arthur Masuaku. Masuaku took out Edouard Mendy with what appeared to be a pass in the 87th minute, but the ball rocketed further into the corner for the Congolese full-first back’s goal in his 96th Premier League game.
Jamaica’s Michail Antonio was heavily involved in the attack in a game that saw him play the full 90 minutes. He even set up an assist for Masuaku’s goal.
David Moyes, West Ham’s manager, was not content by the performance of his team. He went on to tell BT Sport that Masuaku’s goal was just an incredible luck. After 28 minutes, Thiago Silva struck with a head shot from a Mason Mount corner, giving Chelsea the lead.
The 37-year-old who hails from Brazil then came to Chelsea’s rescue from the other end, clearing Vladimir Coufal’s shot on target. However, in the 40th minute, Jorginho placed his goalkeeper Edouard Mendy under pressure with a terrible back pass, giving the hosts a path back into the action. Mendy hauled down Jarrod Bowen, resulting in a penalty kick, which Manuel Lanzini scored.
Mount, back to his form after a hiatus due to molar teeth problems, combined with a long cross from Hakim Ziyech for a thunderous shot that beat Fabianski in the near post. At the beginning of the second half, Chelsea hauled on Romelu Lukaku to replace the injured Kai Havertz, providing the Belgium striker even more minutes in his pursuit for match fitness. Bowen’s powerful and low strike from the edge of the area brought West Ham level in the 56th minute.
Bowen missed a cross from Michail Antonio in the 75th minute, and a Jorginho attempt was diverted wide before Masuaku’s stunning winner. This was the 1st time this season that Chelsea has allowed several goals in any contest. Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea coach stated that it is difficult to expect a result while making so many mistakes.
