The English Women’s Super League openers that went down yesterday saw both Khadija Shaw and Drew Spence of the Reggae Girlz score in their respective matches. It’s unsurprising that Spence seemed happier due to her outstanding performance on her first game as a Tottenham Hotspurs midfielder.
Tottenham got a 2-1 victory with 29-year-old Spence scoring for both teams in the match that went down at Leicester’s King Power Stadium. Striker Shaw, 25, scored a goal in the 53rd minute but Manchester City still lost 4-3 to Aston Villa. The Manchester City – Aston Villa match took place at Villa Park.
Ashleigh Neville’s goal 35 minutes into the game was Tottenham’s opener, Spence arrowed a dazzling long-range shot into the bottom-left side of the goal as the first-half came to an end.
After the break, Spence accidentally scored for her opponents Leicester when she flexed a corner into her team’s net due to Sophie Howard pressurizing her. However, Leicester were still beaten in their home ground.
Spence, who was born in London, is the player who served in Chelsea for the longest period of time having scored 50 goals in 238 games. She was offered a two-year deal by Tottenham in June with the offer having an option of one more year.
Last season, Manchester City finished third in the league rankings. City’s manager, Gareth Taylor, stated that the club’s objective is to win its first Women Super League championship since 2016.
However, City’s line-up is not quite promising. Some players have retired including Ellen White, Karen Bardsley and Jill Scott. Others like Walsh and Lucy Bronze joined Barcelona while Caroline Weir and Georgia Stanway moved to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich respectively.
