In the past, Yohan Blake has also claimed that he doesn’t get enough support from Jamaican fans
Asafa Powell has lamented about the poor state of sports governance in Jamaica. He claimed that he wouldn’t want his children to compete for Jamaica.
He believes that the sport authorities in the nation haven’t done enough to improve the lives of the athletes.
Powell’s children will have big shoes to fill if they decide to follow their father’s footsteps. Powell boasts of being the fourth fastest man of all-time.
The former sprinter was speaking through his YouTube channel – ‘The Powells’. He believes that athletes should get more support from Jamaicans.
He emphasized that Jamaica needs to change its landscape of track and field.
He normally uploads vlogs and podcasts on his YouTube channel. The platform currently boasts of 146k subscribers. He has hosted guests like Justin Gatlin and Noah Lyles on his podcast.
“My kids will not wear Jamaican colors if the system doesn’t change. I know it sounds harsh — but it’s just facts,” said Powell.
Powell’s children, Avani and Liam, have the option of representing Canada and Ghana. They can represent these countries because of his wife’s heritage.
Powell revealed he had an opportunity to run for another country during his career. He claims that he would have made millions if he switched his nationality.
“If I had a time machine I would have taken the offer. I would never have represented Jamaica. I regret the decision I made,” said Powell.
“Now I know now better, my children won’t make the same mistake,” he added.
“The Jamaican system is very harsh to the athletes. There are many athletes who are struggling after retirement. No athlete wants to work a 9-to-5 after retiring from sports.”
The Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association has received a lot of criticism for not improving the lives of athletes. This is despite the nation producing many top athletes like Yohan Blake, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Usain Bolt.
In the past, Blake has also claimed that he doesn’t get enough support from Jamaican fans.
The Jamaica Football Federation has also received criticism from Leon Bailey and the women’s national team. The two parties accused the JFF of unprofessionalism and under-funding the sport.
