Authorities Rebrand The Women’s Premier League

The organizers are hoping that the league will begin on March 1

The Jamaica Women’s Premier League (JWPL) has been rebranded in order to fit into the demands of modern football. The new brand was launched at the Land Rover showroom in Kingston.

According to authorities, the league will be made up of 11 teams. The Professional Women’s Football Jamaica Limited has been tasked with managing, developing and commercializing the league. The Jamaica Premier League (JPL) is managed in a similar manner.

The organizers are hoping that the league will begin on March 1.

Christina Hudson; the chairperson of the PWFJL, revealed that this new format wouldn’t be possible without the help of the Jamaica Football Federation and Supreme Ventures Limited. Rudolph Speid; the chairman of the JFF technical committee and Carlene Edwards of Supreme Ventures, played a major role in rebranding the league.

Hudson believes that they worked seamlessly because they all have a desire to improve the lives of Jamaicans through sports. They also have a deep love for Jamaica.

PWFJL will work on improving the players’ personal development, infrastructure and overall quality of the league. The organisation will improve the infrastructure by working closely with local women’s clubs.

There are many sponsors who are already working with the league. Some of them include: TruShake, Hummel Jamaica, KFC (which offered $2.5 million), Supreme Ventures, the Sports Development Foundation (SDF), Wata, Gatorade, Kind Hearts Foundation and Valvoline. Hudson revealed that PWFJL has already received sponsorships that are worth $10.7 million. In fact, the organisation is expecting more funding in the future.

The official sponsor for kits and equipment is Hummel Jamaica. The organisation will provide 25 away kits, five match balls, two goalkeeper gloves and 25 home kits to every club. The clubs will also receive training bibs, 25 pairs of shin guards, a ball bags as well as 10 training balls.

Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange; the minister of Sports, expressed excitement about the renovation of the women’s league. She insisted that this a ‘step in the right direction.’ She believes that the new format will allow Jamaican women to pursue their passion and hone their skills. The league will also provide employment for other talented individuals like coaches and nutritionists.

The 11 teams include Wifi United FC from Portland, Federal United FC and Frazsiers Whip FC from St Catherine, Cavalier SC and Proven Girls FC from St Thomas. Others include UWI Women’s FC, Arnett Gardens FC, Los Perfectos FC and Mile Gully FC from Manchester. St James will be represented by Real MoBay AFC and Springers United FC.
