Walters, 39, struggled to keep up with his 23-year-old adversary. This is the second time he has lost in his career
Mexican Luis Torres defeated Jamaica’s Nicholas ‘Axeman’ Walters in their recent boxing clash. This is the second time that Walters has lost in a boxing ring. He boasts of being an ex- World Boxing Association champion.
The two featherweights were competing in a 10 rounds fight that was held in in Long Beach, California.
The Jamaican now has a record of 29 wins, two losses, and a draw. On the other hand, Torres has a record of to 21 wins and one defeat.
Walters, 39, struggled to keep up with his 23-year-old adversary. It wasn’t surprising that the Axeman showed some ring rust considering he has been inactive for the last 11 months. The fight was a slug-fest from the opening bell. Both men came out aggressively with the aim of knocking each other out.
Walters took a low stance while throwing hooks to the head and body. Torres, who was fighting in a southpaw stance, gave as much as he got. He refused to back off. At the end, it was Walters who won the first round. Both men maintained the same aggression in the second round. This round was taken by Torres who looked like the sharper man.
The slug-fest continued into the third round, with both fighters looking like they’re in a hurry. They continued throwing “fight-ending punches” from every angle.
Torres started looking like the fresher fighter as the round progressed. Referee Rudy Barragan stopped the fight temporarily after a clash of heads. This sequence was followed by a nasty hook that hurt Walters.
Walters started retreating, kneeled down, stood up and began turning his back. The Jamaican managed to survive this sequence because the round came to an end. However, his team refused to let him fight for another round.
After the fight, Walters told journalists that he might have lost because he returned to the ring on short notice. He believes that it would have been better to train for a longer period because Torres was a very tough cookie. He promised that he would deliver a better performance in his next match.
“I will train much harder so that I can give my fans what they deserve. I will learn from this setback and improve,” he said.
