Bailey now has 5 goals and 3 assists in the EPL. Additionally, Villa now has 14 home wins in the league
Jamaican international Leon Bailey scored a late goal to help Aston Villa beat Manchester City in the English Premier League. This win means that Villa is now has 32 points, 2 points ahead of city. Villa is also third in the league, two points behind Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool FC.
Manchester City are the defending champions and this loss left analysts questioning their poor form. In the post-match interview, City manager Pep Guardiola lacked a proper explanation for his side’s poor form.
Bailey’s goal came in 74th minute after the Villa players failed to convert numerous chances. Earlier in the week, Guardiola claimed that his team was ready to claim their fourth league title in a row. On the other hand, Villa are not considered as title favorites. However, they have managed to squeeze themselves in the title picture with this impressive win.
Villa got an easy chance to score when John McGinn picked out Leon Bailey in the beginning of the first half. Bailey produced a powerful shot with his weaker right foot but City goalkeeper Ederson Moraes came up with a brilliant save. Although he tested the goalkeeper, it might have been better to cross to Ollie Watkins who would have had an easy tap-in.
Defender Pau Torres also had a shot that was blocked by Ederson. Manchester got a chance to take the lead in the 30th minute but Halland saw his shot saved by goalkeeper Emi Martinez. The two teams kept going back and forth but they went into the half-time break with no goals.
Aston Villa kept piling up the pressure on City and their efforts were rewarded in the 74th minute. Bailey dribbled past Josko Gvardiol before shooting with his right foot. The shot left Ederson in no-man’s-land because the ball was deflected off Ruben Diaz’s foot.
City is now on a three-game winless streak, with their games ending in draws. Arsenal is on top of the table with 36 points, after a 4-3 win against Luton in their last match. Bailey now has 5 goals and 3 assists in the EPL. Additionally, Villa now has 14 home wins in the league.
