Khadijah ”Bunny” Shaw scored an early goal to help Manchester City remain at the top of the Women’s Super League. Lauren Hemp also scored for Manchester City in the second half. The game ended with a score-line of 2-1 in favor of Manchester City.
Manchester City is currently tied with Chelsea on the top position. However, Chelsea is ahead on goal difference.
Shaw’s team has earned their spot on the top thanks to their 12 straight wins, including a recent 1-0 win over Chelsea.
The Citizens were fired up for this clash against Everton and it was obvious in their performance. They dominated Brian Sorensen’s team for the entirety of the match. This win means that City have now beaten the Merseyside team in all 16 of their league meetings. The game happened in the Joie Stadium.
City dominated the early stages by controlling majority of the possession. However, they were struggling to create any goal-scoring opportunity. The City attackers had a few tame efforts that didn’t trouble the Everton goalkeeper.
Everton defender Justine Vanhaevermaet made a mistake by passing the ball directly into Shaw’s path. The Jamaican striker smashed in the opener after finding herself with an abundance of space. The Reggae Girl scored in the 15th minute.
The Citizens gained a lot of confidence from this goal and they began to look even more dangerous. Lauren Hemp and Chloe Kelly delivered some dangerous balls but Shaw was unable to score another goal. City had 13 shots but the first-half ended with a 1-0 score-line. Meanwhile, Everton got a chance to equalize but Rikke Madsen only produced a weak shot that went straight to the City goalkeeper.
Shaw and her teammates returned with the same momentum in the second half. Shaw got the first opportunity to add a second goal but her effort went over the bar. Hemp was the one who found the second goal after she combined brilliantly with midfielder Laura Coombs. She produced a long-range effort that found a way into the bottom corner. The midfielder’s impressive goal arrived in the 55th minute.
The Everton players refused to submit to City and they began fighting back. They responded almost immediately by pushing City back into their box. The City defenders failed to clear a loose ball and Everton’s Hanna Bennison capitalized with a well-taken goal. She smashed in an unforgettable screamer from outside the box. The two teams continued fighting for superiority with the match going back and forth. Despite their efforts, none of the teams could find another goal.
