FIFA recently ranked the Reggae Boyz as the best team in the Caribbean Football Union. This means that they are the highest ranked Caribbean team in the organization’s World Rankings. FIFA officials made this announcement from Zurich, Switzerland.
The Boyz took the 55th spot in the world rankings. This means that Jamaica is sixth in the Concacaf region rankings. The apex body of football rewarded the Jamaicans with a boost in the rankings after they ended the year with a bang. The Concacaf region produced four teams in the world’s top 100 list.
The Jamaicans competed against many competitive teams in 2023. They finished the year will an unforgettable 3-2 comeback win against hosts Canada. This second leg win meant that the teams finished with an aggregate score of 4-4 over two matches. The Boyz advanced to the finals of the Concacaf Nations League because they got the away goal tiebreaker. This win will go down in history as the first time the Reggae Boyz beat Canadian on their own soil.
The Jamaicans will play the Finals in March. Their performances also secured them a spot in the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa America.
The Boyz also played in the Concacaf Gold Cup in the early stages of 2023. Unfortunately, they were knocked out in the semi-finals by Mexico. The Mexicans won with a 3-0 score line. The tournament was held in the United States.
The FIFA top 100 is also made up of other nations from the CFU. They include 89th-ranked Haiti, 90th-ranked Curacao, 96th-ranked Trinidad & Tobago and 142nd-ranked Antigua & Barbuda. Haiti, Curacao, Trinidad & Tobago and Antigua & Barbuda are ranked ninth, 10th, 11th and 14th best CFU teams in Concacaf respectively.
All the teams have maintained their previous month’s rankings.
Suriname rounds up the CFU top 10 in the world list by finishing at position 143. Others include the 147th-ranked St Kitts & Nevis, 151st-ranked Dominican Republic, 157th-ranked Guyana and 160th-ranked Puerto Rico. Suriname, St Kitts & Nevis, Dominican Republic, Guyana and Puerto Rico are ranked 15th, 16th, 11th and 17th, 18th and 19th best teams in Concacaf respectively.
The world rankings identify St Lucia as the 167th ranked team. The team is also ranked 20th in Concacaf and 11th in the CFU.
