The Jamaica Boxing Association believes that World Boxing can help them launch a boxing competition in schools
ST JAMES, Jamaica— Boris van der Vorst; who is the president of World Boxing, said that he was impressed by the Gloves over Guns initiative.
The Dutchman got a first-hand experience of the programme when he visited the Montego Bay Boxing Gym. He observed as students were taken through an intense training session. The individuals involved were from the six St James schools.
The Jamaica Boxing Association started this initiative in their quest to combat violence. They believe that a structured sports programme can prevent people from participating in crime. Boxing can be an income-generating activity. The sport can teach skills that can be used inside and outside the ring.
“I’m glad that you’ve enrolled for boxing classes. This is a sport that can transform lives. Pay attention to what your coaches are telling you. This is because boxing requires discipline,” van der Vorst told the students.
Stephen ‘Bomber’ Jones; who is the president of Jamaica Boxing Association, said that this is a very important visit for Jamaica. He believes that World Boxing can help him launch a boxing competition in schools.
“We would like to start a high school competition. Ideally, this tournament will be composed of 16 schools. This will be the best way to improve the sport in the grassroots,” Jones told journalists.
“The World Boxing president has seen what we are trying to do and we have received a stamp of approval. We believe he will help us realize this dream. His visit means that we are closer than ever,” he added.
Van der Vorst is expected to leave on Tuesday after completing his four-day tour of Jamaica.
