Reggae Boyz Coach Heimir Hallgrímsson revealed that they are expecting a tough match when they face Mexico. He said that Mexico’s playing style is similar to Guatemala. However, he believes that their rivals play at a higher level.
The two sides will be clashing in the semi-final of the Concacaf Gold Cup. the event will be hosted in Paradise, Nevada. Hallgrímsson revealed that he was paying attention when the Mexican team outclassed Costa Rica in their 2-0 quarter-final win.
Hallgrímsson described Mexico as a team that transitions quickly from defence to attack. He revealed that this is the same style that he expected when Jamaica played Guatemala. He emphasized that both teams play similarly with or without the ball. However, he believes that Mexico has more skillful players. These special players are known for creating something out of nothing.
Hallgrímsson believes that his team will have to match Mexico’s energy.
Hallgrímsson led Jamaica Mexico to a 2-2 draw when the two teams last met in the Concacaf Nations League in March. The game happened in Mexico City. This went down as Hallgrímsson’s first competitive match in charge of Jamaica.
The two nations have a deep history in the Concacaf Gold Cup. In 2015, the Reggae Boyz finished as runners up. They lost the final to Mexico in a 3-1 loss.
Jamaica won 1-0 when the two teams met again in the 2017 semi-final. The boyz won through a Kemar Lawrence free kick. The United States won the final in a 2-1 win against Jamaica.
