HILLEL Academy accumulated 243 points when they recently won the YMCA/Burger King Prep & Primary Schools Swim Championships. The young swimmers delivered spectacular performances that showcased their exceptional skill and determination. They were competing in the overall competition and the boys’ category.
St. Hugh’s Preparatory School continued their majestic performance in the girls’ division. This performance means that they are on a five-fight winning streak in 2024, they gathered 113 points to clinch the top spot.
During the event, Kai Lawson, a sixth-grade pupil at St. Hugh’s, showcased remarkable achievements by establishing new records in the 9-10 age bracket for both the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke.
The meet also featured record-breaking efforts from Kai Lawson, a sixth-grade student at St Hugh’s. She set new records in the 50m backstroke and the 50m freestyle in the 9-10 age group.
Students from Saints Peter and Paul Preparatory School and Mona Preparatory School found themselves in a tightly-contested match. They both finished in second place with 159 points. The young swimmers demonstrated enthusiasm and a competitive spirit despite competing in harsh weather conditions.
The event was highlighted by the Vibes Check award, — featuring Jennifer “JennyJenny” Small — by BK. This special recognition was meant to honor the competitors that possessed the most team spirit. This award was won by St Peter and Paul, they went home with the $50,000 prize because they showed liveliness when participating in the competition. This liveliness greatly contributed to the event’s atmosphere.
Rashai Graham, the Burger King Assistant Brand Manager, said that their company is happy to have a beautiful partnership with the BK swim meet. This partnership has been in existence for the last two decades.
Graham said that their company believes in the potential of sports to enhance the development of young people. She said that they want to bring attention to lesser-known sports in Jamaica. Witnessing these budding athletes demonstrate their talents in a nurturing atmosphere is truly uplifting.
