Vivianne Mieddema was the star of the show during Shaw’s absence. She scored twice to help her side hand Chelsea their first loss of the season
Manchester City played without Jamaican superstar Khadija Shaw when they met Chelsea in their latest match. The two teams were playing in the Women’s Champions League. The game was played in the Joie Stadium.
The Jamaican striker picked up a muscle injury when City played against Chelsea in the League Cup final. The Citizens were also missing the services of Aoba Fujino who was also sidelined by an injury.
Nick Cushing; who is the interim head coach of Man City women’s team, said that he believes that his players are “significantly injured”.
“This are some of the most problematic injuries that we deal with. A proper diagnosis will take a few days. We’ll have to wait a while to know the extent of the injuries. Only the doctors can confirm how long they will be sidelined,” Cushing said.
Shaw is leading the goal-scoring charts thanks to her 12 goals in 14 appearances in the Women’s Super League. She also boasts of being City’s all-time leading goalscorer.
The Manchester City squad has been hampered by injuries in the current season. They are already missing the services of defender Rebecca Knaak, captain Alex Greenwood and winger Lauren Hemp.
Vivianne Mieddema was the star of the show during Shaw’s absence. She helped her side hand Chelsea their first loss of the season. She scored two goals despite being introduced as a second-half substitute. The two teams will meet again in the second leg of the Women Champion’s League. They are playing in the quarter finals of the competition.
The two sides will have clashed four times over the course of two weeks.
Their next meeting will happen on Sunday when they meet in the WSL. The return leg of the Champions League game will happen on Thursday.
