Jamaica Hosts the President of World Boxing

He decided to visit Jamaica because he believes that the nation can spearhead the development of boxing in the Caribbean and the world

Jamaica is set to host the president of World Boxing, Boris van der Vorst. The boxing official is expected the next four days in the island country. He was received with a warm welcome when he arrived in the Sangster International Airport.

According to Stephen ‘Bomber’ Jones, president of the Jamaica Boxing Association: “It’s a really big deal that Jamaica is hosting a dignitary of this magnitude. This carries even more weight now that the 2028 Olympic Games will officially include boxing events.”

Van der Vorst is scheduled to visit St James where he will be hosted by a gym that is owned by the Jamaica Boxing Board. This environment will allow him to have a first-hand experience of what the nation’s boxing is all about. He will also visit Kingston’s St Andrew Technical High School. The school has a developing boxing programme.

Van der Vorst will get a chance to sample the culinary delights, beauty and warmth of the Jamaican people. He will be taken to some of the nation’s finest cultural spaces. Additionally, he is expected to interact with stakeholders in the boxing industry. They will discuss how to strengthen and enhance grassroots development of the sport.

“Jamaica is playing its part to ensure that boxing will become a powerhouse in the Caribbean region. The president of World Boxing can help push our agenda on the world stage. We have talented fighters, all we need is the right infrastructure to thrive at the highest level. We are hoping that the president can give us his endorsement,” said Jones.
