The Reggae Boyz will be hoping to win their second match against Ecuador
HOUSTON, TEXAS — Mexico secured an opening day win after defeating Jamaica in the ongoing Copa America tournament. Gerardo Arteaga scored the only goal of the match to ensure that his team went home with three points.
El Tri dominated the match in the first half before the goal arrived in the 69th minute. It was a memorable goal because Arteaga hit the ball from the edge of the penalty box. This is the 11th time that the Mexican national team has competed in this competitions.
Joel Latibeaudiere made a clumsy clearance in the box and the ball fell to Luis Romo, who passed to Arteaga. The Mexican left-back delivered a thunderous shot that beat goalkeeper Jahmali Waite. Arteaga, who plays for Liga MX club Monterrey, has now scored two goals in 25 games for Mexico. His shot went in through the far post.
Jamaica tried to fight back with a Michail Antonio goal that arrived in the 50th minute. Unfortunately, this goal was disallowed after the video assistant referees deemed it to be offside. The Reggae Boyz players continued with their fight but they failed to find an equalizer.
Mexico captain Edson Álvarez was replaced by Romo after he limped off with a hamstring injury in the 30th minute.
Jamaica is in Group B together with Ecuador, Venezuela and Mexico. The Reggae Boyz will be hoping to win their next match against Ecuador. The game will happen in Las Vegas, USA. This match is set to happen on 26th June. A win will boost their chances of making it out of the group.
In the other Group B game, Venezuela secured a score-line of 2-1 over Ecuador. Venezuela will clash against Mexico in Inglewood, California. This game will happen on 27th June.
The final games in this group will happen on June 30. On this day, Jamaica will face Venezuela while Mexico will play against Ecuador.
Jamaica and Mexico were playing in the NRG Stadium in front a crowd of 53,763 people.
El Tri have played in the semifinals in 2007, 1999 and 1997. The Reggae haven’t found much success in this tournament, they were eliminated in the group-stage in 2016 and 2015.
Jamaica hasn’t beaten El Tri since the semifinal of the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
