Daniel Wright and Kelly Ann Carr will represent Jamaica in the World U20 Championships after they qualified for the 400m hurdles semifinals. The competition is happening in Lima, Peru.
Carr booked her spot in the women’s section after delivering a time of 1:00.61 seconds to finish in second position. Australia’s Alesha Bennetts won the race with a time 59.04 seconds. The third position was taken by Haiti’s Gloria Guerrier who recorded a time of 1:00.65 seconds.
Deschanique Douglas, Jamaica’s other entrant, failed to advance after she finished ninth with a time of 1:05.43 seconds.
The women’s fastest qualifiers are USA’s Michelle Smith with 57.85 seconds and France’s Candice Von Plauen who finished with 58.00 seconds. South Africa’s Tumi Ramokgopa also impressed with a time of 58.04 seconds.
Wright defeated his male competitors with a time of 51.42 seconds. This performance won him his heat and he qualified as the third-fastest overall. Trevoy Smith, Jamaica’s other entrant, failed to advance despite being fourth in his heat with a time of 52.15 seconds.
Finland’s Antti Sainio and Japan’s Kairi Gonda were the fastest male qualifiers with 51.19 seconds and 51.21 seconds respectively.
