He urged that modern players should take advantage of the opportunities that come with the refurbished tournament
The premier cricket competition will now be known as the Michael Holding Senior Cup. The tournament has been renamed in order to celebrate the career of Michael Holding. He is renowned for being a West Indies fast bowling legend.
The Jamaica Cricket Association revealed that the tournament will receive sponsorship from Stewart’s Automotive; a motor vehicle giant. The officials were speaking at the Kingston Cricket Club.
During the launch, the 71-year-old Holding sent a video that was broadcast to the audience. He said that he is fully behind the idea of rebranding the competition. He revealed that he believed in red-ball cricket because it contributed to the success he enjoyed in his career. He still has fond memories of his time at Melbourne Cricket Club where he participated in the Senior Cup competition.
Holding enjoyed a spectacular West Indies career in which she secured 249 wickets in 60 Test matches. He emphasized that modern players should take advantage of the opportunities that come with the refurbished tournament.
The competition; which will be made up of 24 teams, is expected to begin on March 15. This is according to O’neil Cruickshank, the JCA Cricket Operations Manager. The teams will be fielded from parishes and clubs.
The teams will be categorized in several groups. The knockout stages will be contested among the first-place team and the two best runners-up. The preliminary rounds will come with an award that will recognize the Player of the Round. There will also be an award for the Player of the Match award when the tournament reaches the knockout stages.
