The new coach will be expected to help the Reggae Boyz qualify for the next World Cup
The Jamaica Football Federation is currently interviewing candidates who are interested in coaching the Jamaican national team. The federation is hoping to announce the new coach before the beginning of the Concacaf Nations League.
The Reggae Boyz squad is expected to face Cuba in the National Stadium. This game is scheduled to take place on 6th September, 2024.
The federation was forced to look for a new coach after Heimir Hallgrimsson decided to resign from his position. The Icelandic coach had a reign that lasted for nearly two years. He quit after failing to win any game at the 2024 Copa America.
The Boyz conceded seven and scored just one goal in the entire competition. The team’s last match was on June 30 when they lost 3-0 to Venezuela.
Dennis Chung, the federation’s general secretary, said that they have created a committee that will interview the candidates. He revealed that the committee has received applications from 40 candidates. They have reduced this list to a total of 5 candidates. They are expected to make a decision within the next seven days.
According to Chung, the position has attracted many candidates because Jamaica has a high-likelihood of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This could be the first time that the Concacaf region could be represented by eight teams. The tournament will be co-hosted by Mexico, Canada and the USA. The tournament has been expanded to include 48 nations which will be playing 104 games.
Jamaica can qualify for the World Cup by winning the group stages of the Concacaf qualification. They can also qualify through the FIFA Play-off Tournament as the best two runners-up.
The new coach will be expected to help the Reggae Boyz qualify for the next World Cup. He will also decide whether to recall Leon Bailey into the national team.
