The Jamaica Football Federation is mourning the death of Wilverglen Lamey. He is a referee who passed away while conducting a match between Seprod at the Alpha Institute and Metrodade Security.
Lamey, aged 48, collapsed and died during the match that was held in South Camp Road. The federation celebrated him for dedicating his life towards developing Jamaican football. He has been a referee at all levels of the nation’s football.
Michael Ricketts; the JFF president, described Lamey as a honorable man who ensured that matches were conducted with dignity. He was a well-known figure who officiated all sorts of tournaments regardless of their prestige. Ricketts sent a message of condolence to his family and friends. He also sent a prayer to the referee fraternity.
KSAFA also released a statement in which they described him as a dedicated servant. They said that he loved educating officials and players about the laws of the game. “He is an esteemed official who has left a lasting impact on the sport,” said a KSAFA official.
Olivia “Babsy” Grange; the Sports Minister, said that it will be difficult to fill the void that has been left by Lamey. She sent a message of condolence to everyone who was close to Lamey. Grange said that “This is a sad moment for all of us who love sports, we pray that his soul rests in peace.”
Waterhouse FC also mourned the referee’s death by releasing a statement. The football club praised Lamey for his integrity and professionalism. They said that Lamey will be remembered for always enforcing the rules without favoring any team.
Craig Butler; the founder of the Phoenix Academy, also mourned Lamey. He described him as a ”valued friend and a nice man.”
Lamey has officiated in local matches for around 20 years. He has been involved in competitions like the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association tournaments and the Jamaica Premier League.
