Khadijah Shaw showed leadership as Manchester City defeated Barcelona in the Women’s Champions League.
The Jamaica captain registered a goal that put a nail in Barcelona’s coffin. The Citizens began the game with a first half goal from defender Naomi Layzell. This was opening game of the tournament. The match was played in Manchester, England.
This was a stunning result because Barcelona are the defending champions of the Champions League trophy.
The Barcelona players began the game strongly and it wasn’t long before Caroline Graham Hansen got a chance to score. However, her shot went wide.
The Spanish team got another chance to score but Alexia Putellas hit her shot straight at the Manchester City goalkeeper.
Khadijah Shaw created two back to back opportunities but her teammates failed to finish their chances.
Naomi Layzell scored a 36th minute goal after Vivianne Miedema knocked down a cross. The opportunity was created from a corner kick situation.
Barcelona continued to fight back but they failed to convert their opportunities into goals. They kept this momentum in the second half but they still couldn’t find the back of the net.
Manchester City found their second goal in the 77th minute when Shaw received a through ball from Naomi Layzell. She ran past two defenders before dribbling past the goalkeeper and passing the ball into an empty net.
The two teams continued to look for more goals but the game ended with a score-line of 2-0 in favor of Manchester City. The second leg between these two teams will happen on 18th December. The two teams are in Group D together with Hammarby Fotboll and SKN St. Pölten.
According to Barca star Aitana Bonmatí, they struggled to deal with Manchester City’s physicality.
