Coach Steve McLaren has included Leon Bailey in the latest Reggae Boyz squad. The squad is expected to compete in Nations League matches during the upcoming international break.
Leon Bailey has been called up to represent Jamaica in the upcoming Concacaf Nations League games next month, marking his return to international duty.
The 27-year-old has missed recent games because of a dispute between him and the Jamaican Football Federation. However, the arrival of Steve McLaren has breathed new life into Bailey’s international career.
The squad is made up 23 players that will compete against Cuba and Honduras. These games will be played on September 6 and September 10 respectively.
Bailey’s last international appearance happened on November 2023. Former coach Heimir Hallgrimsson slapped him with a suspension after he broke curfew rules. Bailey reacted to this suspension by making himself unavailable for the national. He even missed two World Cup qualifiers versus Dominica and the Dominican Republic.
He even refused to play in the Copa America tournament in that was held in July.
McLaren said that he had found an agreement between himself and the player after lengthy discussions. He challenged Bailey to deliver high-level performances like the ones he has been producing in Aston Villa.
McLaren said that he wants to assemble the best players with Jamaican heritage. McLaren has also been recruiting UK-born players like Mason Greenwood.
The squad is made up of big names like Demarai Gray, Ethan Pinnock, Michail Antonio and Shamar Nicholson. The newcomers include Adrian Reid Jr and Norman Campbell.
