Marlon Samuels, a former cricketer for the West Indies has been charged with breaching four codes of the anti-Corruption code for Participants of the T10 League. On behalf of the (ECB) Emirate’s cricket board, the ICC has found him guilty of corruption offenses. Samuels made his test and ODI debuts for West Indies in 2000 as a 19-year-old. He has participated in 67 twenty internationals, 207 ODIs and 71 tests. The 56-ball 78 match against Sri Lanka in the World T20 final in 2012 was his highest point which aided the Windies with winning the title.
Samuels was found guilty after it was confirmed that he had links with an illegal bookie in 2008. He was then debarred for two years. Lately, he has been newly charged for failing to reveal the receipt of any payment, gift, hospitality and reimbursements that may have been made or any instances that could bring the cricket sport into disgrace.
He was charged with failing to cooperate with the Anti-corruption official investigation, hiding important information that may be of importance to the investigation. He also delayed and obstructed the investigation and failed to unveil the $750 receipt of hospitality and more to the Anti-Corruption investigators. The former star was therefore given a 14 days period to answer to the alleged charges.
In the meantime, cricket West Indies confirms that they are aware of the recent developments and have made it clear that they don’t such behaviors within the sport. They are also in full support of the efforts by the ICC Anti-Corruption unit to get rid of corruption in the cricket. “Formal charges have been laid with breaching four counts of the Emirates Cricket Board’s Anti-Corruption Code for participants of the T10 League in Abu Dhabi in 2019,” CWI said. This is not the first time that the 40-year-old has made such grave offences. In January 21, 2007, Samuels was found guilty and imprisoned after he was caught sharing crucial team information with a bookmaker in exchange for cash. This was before the first ODI in Nagpur.
Marlon Nathaniel Samuels was a Jamaican cricketer, a former ODI captain and played in three formats internationally for the West indies. He was an off-spinner and right-handed middle order batsman. Marlon Samuels’ talent was one to die for. At the age of 19, he completed his Test debut and was considered sensational by many of his fans. He was extremely good and was compared to the likes of Sir Vivian Richards. However, Samuels was unable to cope up with the fame and attention that he got so early into his career just like his predecessors.
As a result, his career never really took off due to the many cases where his off-field adventures were often highlighted more than his on-field encounters in addition to a series of injuries he sustained afterwards. He has been suspended by the ICC three times from bowling during his career. In November 2020, he retired officially from the international cricket sport.
Since retirement Marlon Samuels the self proclaimed “Icon” been keeping busy with his cologne line Sextillion brand and seeming to be venturing in other areas, as can be seen on his Instagram.
