Mason Greenwood Is A Reggae Boy

Jamaican fans are likely to see him when the Reggae Boyz are engaged in World Cup qualifiers in June

Reports claim that Mason Greenwood has officially switched his international allegiance from England to Jamaica. The ex-Manchester United player signed the paperwork required to play for the Jamaican Reggae Boyz.

The United academy product is enjoying a wonderful season as an Olympique de Marseille player. He completed a move to the French team during the last summer window. He has been under the tutelage of Coach Roberto De Zerbi.

Marseille is currently sitting in the second position in the French first division. Greenwood has played a major role in helping Marseille fortunes. He is the leading goal scorer in Ligue 1 with 12 goals.

Greenwood was kicked out of the England national team after he was involved in a domestic violence case.

Many people had speculated that Greenwood might get a lifeline after Thomas Tuchel was named as the boss of the England national team. However, this comeback is unlikely because he is also unwanted by the nation’s football authorities.

Over the last year, the striker has been toying with the idea of playing for the Reggae Boyz. He is eligible for the nation because he has Jamaican grandparents.

He is expected to reunite with Steve McClaren who is the current boss of the Jamaican national team. The two individuals worked together when McClaren was one of the coaches in Manchester United.

McClaren has previously said that the Jamaica Football Federation was working on recruiting Greenwood. He confirmed that the player was interested in completing the move.

According to English media, “Greenwood was left with no choice after he learned that the English Football Association will allow him into their national team.”

FIFA allows players to switch nations if they have 3 or less appearances. He had only represented the England national team on one occasion.

Theoretically, he can make his debut in February.

However, Marseille are not expected to release him for these friendly fixtures. Jamaican fans are more likely to see him when the Reggae Boyz are engaged World Cup qualifiers in June. They will play against Guatemala and the British Virgin Islands.
