Michail Antonio’s red card was the highlight of the game as Westham were frustrated by Southampton to a dramatic draw. ‘’The Hammers’’ remain unbeaten in four premier league matches while Southampton is yet to win any match this season. The Jamaican international was sent off after a strong tackle on Moussa Djenepo; this challenge earned him a second yellow card in second-half stoppage time. West Ham failed to trouble Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy for majority of the game despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession. However, Antonio got a chance to drive a low shot at the Southampton keeper at the start of the second half. Southampton almost stole the win when Chelsea loanee Armando Broja hit the post with an intelligent strike that had beaten Westham’s goalkeeper. He also saw his header cleared by a by a last-minute block by West Ham midfielder Declan Rice. There have been 25 goals scored between Southampton and Westham this season but both teams struggled to kill off each other in the first half of this game. The second half had more chances and drama, making it one of the most entertaining goalless draws you’ll ever see. Antonio was struggling to impact the game and even squandered a chance to open the scoring for Westham in the second half. He looked like a frustrated figure and it didn’t help that he received a yellow card in the 71st minute for an unnecessary foul on Saints defender Jack Stephens. The 31-year-old, who was named as the League’s Player of the Month, has been in brilliant form but he was having a horrible time against Saints. He showed his frustration when he dived in with a late tackle on Djenepo as the game came to an end. The referee showed him as second yellow card and a red card that saw him receive his matching orders. Westham manager David Moyes was left fuming as Antonio left the pitch.
The Jamaican international is the top scorer in a league full of big names like Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku. He currently leads the English premier league scoring charts with 4 goals together with Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes. Lukaku is on 3 goals while Ronaldo is on 2 goals. The battle for the golden boot is just heating up and many Jamaican fans will be hoping that he can keep up with the big boys. However, Antonio’s quest to be the top scorer has been derailed by his red card which will see him miss the next match. Antonio recently made his debut for Jamaica as the country battled for a world cup spot in next year’s world cup. Michail Antonio is likely to feature in the next game as Westham face off against Dinamo Zagreb in the group stages of the Europa league on Thursday, 16th September. However, he will miss his team’s crucial match against Manchester united in the league on Sunday 19th September.
