The Milo Western Relays has added Discus and shot put throws to this year’s event. This is the 45th staging of this boys and girls tournament. This event will be hosted at the GC Foster College of Physical Education and Sport in St Catherine.
Milo has promised to invest $4 million into the event. The news was delivered by Ray Harvey, chairman of the organizing committee. The event will happen on Saturday, February 10. The game will last between 10 a.m and end at 6 p.m. Harvey was speaking at the Holy Trinity Church Hall in Westgate, Montego Bay, St James.
Harvey revealed that they have been planning to add these events for awhile. He said that adding these games was easy because the facility at GC Foster allows them to host them.
The Milo Western Relays event is in its sixth year at GC Foster. They will using this ground because the Montego Bay Sports Complex is currently being repaired.
Nekesha Bartholomew-Ramey, the Nestle Jamaica consumer marketing manager, emphasized that Western Relays will always be part of Milo’s plans. She said that the company is committed in ensuring that the athletes achieve excellence. Bartholomew-Ramey believes that that Western Relays produce some of the best athletes.
According to Bartholomew-Ramey, Milo decided to sponsor the Western Relays because the event is true to their brand. The core of the Milo brand is sports and activities. The company loves the energy that is created by the Western Relays event.
The athletes that finish in the top four places will be be rewarded with different prize moneys for the three relays 4x800m, 4x400m and 4x100m. The athletes will receive $5,000 for fourth, $10,000 for third, $20,000 for second and $40,000 for first place. These reward is for all three boys and girls high school relays. There will be 60m races for senior athletes.
The tournament normally happens on the second Saturday of every February. The tournament was previously known as ‘Comets Relays’. Some of the main sponsors include Milo, OnDiRun, World Class Athletics, Jamaica Olympic Association, TrackAlerts and Custom Marble.
