Moyes Demanding More Goals from Antonio
West Ham coach David Moyes is happy that his club is sitting in the fifth position in the English premiere league. However, he has demanded more goals from Jamaican striker Michail Antonio.
Moyes feels that Antonio and Jarrod Bowen will have to be in their best goal-scoring form if WestHam are to continue competing with the bigger teams.
Michail Antonio began the season as the premier league’s top scorer but his goals have dried up in recent weeks. Recently, the goals have been distrusted among different stars like Bowen and Soucek. Moyes said that he has been impressed with Antonio’s latest performances and he remains hopeful that the 31-year-old is getting closer to his best.
Antonio is West Ham’s top scorer this season with 8 goals and 6 assists. Jarrod Bowen has also been on fire with 8 goals and 8 assists in the league.
Antonio’s last goal came against Crystal Palace on January, 1, 2022. He has not found the back of the net in five premier league games. That goal on New Year’s Day was after he had endured another goal drought of eight games without a goal.
West Ham have scored nine times since the last time Antonio scored, including Pablo Fornals (1), Jarrod Bowen (5), Manuel Lanzini’s brace at Palace and Craig Dawson (1).
Despite Antonio’s lack of goals, West ham is ranked as the fourth best attacking team in the premiere league. Having scored 44 goals, the Irons sit behind leaders Man City, Chelsea (48) and Liverpool (61).
David Moyes has said that he is happy that his side doesn’t have to rely on Antonio for all the goals but he still wants his striker to play like he did at the start of the season. The first five games saw Antonio record an impressive record of five goals and three assists.
West Ham shared the points with Newcastle in their last game over the weekend. Craig Dawson scored in the 32nd minute but Newcastle’s wonder kid Joe Willock responded with a goal in the 45th minute. Antonio had another disappointing game in front of goal but he managed to put in a good performance.
Antonio will get another chance to redeem himself when West ham meet Wolves on 27th February. This game is going to be a cracker because both teams have been flying high. Both teams are battling to finish between the fourth and seventh position in order to secure qualification into the lucrative European tournaments.
