National U20 Champions Hailed by the Chess Federation

Mark Cameron, JCC Chairperson of Public Relations, Praised the Two Winners for Their Outstanding Performance

Both the female and male under-20 national champions have been praised by the Jamaica Chess Federation (JCC) for their brilliant display in the National Junior Chess Championship. The JCC commented that this is one of their most esteemed tournaments as it has brought together some of the best young players.

This year’s National Junior U20 Championships saw the Candidate Master (CM) Jaden Shaw and Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Raehanna Brown win the Absolute and Female divisions respectively. During the September 3rd to September 4th weekend, 4 rounds were played while the rest were played during the September 10th to September 11th weekend.

The tournament went down in Kingston, Jamaica. When the eight-round competition was concluded, Wolmer’s Boys’ School student Shaw had won the Absolute division with 7.5 out of 8 points. Moreover, Campion College student Brown won the Female division by securing all the 8 points.

The Absolute section which was quite hectic saw Jamaica College student Christopher Lyn take second position 2 with 5.5 out of 8 points. Shaheem Richards of St Catherine High School took third place with 5.0 out of 8 points and Wolmerian John Stephenson claimed fourth place with 4.5 out of 8 points.

As for the Female section, Immaculate Conception High School’s Gabriella Watson finished second with 6.5 out of 8 points; Kaity Gayle of St Andrew High School took third place with 5.0 out of 8 points and Campion’s College Arielle McKoy finished in fourth place with 4.5 out of 8 points.
