The Jamaican international said that he is happy to be a US citizen because he has lived in the country for the past 12 years
Jamaican captain Andre Blake is now a dual citizen of Jamaica and United States. The Jamaican-born footballer was recently sworn as a naturalized citizen of the US.
Blake was sworn on July 24 after he passed his naturalization exam in the beginning of the month. The dual citizenship status has also been extended to his two children and his wife.
Blake plays a goalkeeper for Philadelphia Union; a Major League Soccer club. He has established himself as one of the best players in US-based league. He has won the goalkeeper of the year award three times.
The Jamaican international said that he is happy to be a US citizen because he has lived in the country for the past 12 years. He believes that dual citizenship allows him and his family to enjoy the best of both worlds. He said that can’t wait to see what the future holds.
Jim Curtin ; the Philadelphia Union head coach, congratulated Blake for earning his citizenship. He described him as a ”true Philadelphian” who carries himself with class both as an athlete and as a person. He described him as a talented athlete who oozes leadership and commitment.
Since his 2014 debut, Blake boasts of 231 combined Audi MLS Cup playoff and MLS regular season appearances.
In 2022, he awarded with the John Wanamaker Athletic Award. This accolade is meant to celebrate organizations, teams and athletes that who promote a positive image of Philadelphia. The four-time MLS All-Star is the first male footballer to win this award since it was started in 1961.
