The Jamaican women’s team has secured a spot in the knockout round after holding Brazil in a 0-0 draw. The Reggae Girlz secured this upset during the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The two teams have been competing in Group F together with France and Panama. France finished on top of the group with 7 points after their 6-3 win over Panama. Jamaica finished second with five points. Brazil secured 4 points while Panama finished with no points.
The Jamaicans came in as the underdogs and no one was expecting them to knock out the fearsome Brazil. This is because Brazil is known for producing the best footballers in the world. Brazil dominated the ball for majority of the game. The Brazilians finished the game with 73% possession and 8 shots on target.
The Brazilians recorded more shots on target but the the Reggae Girlz goal keeper was in an unstoppable mood.
This draw means that the Girlz have not conceded any goal in the group stage. The Jamaicans will face off against the winner of of Group H. The winner will be Colombia, Morocco or Germany.
Brazil coach Pia Sundhage was disappointed by her team’s performance. She claimed that her players needed to use the width better. She was also hoping that they would create more chances. She expressed disappointment that her strikers were blunt in front of goal.
Sundhage praised the Jamaican team for showing a lot of “fight.” She revealed that they found it tough to get past the Reggae Girlz defenders. She said that now they are just forced to accept the result.
Since 1995, this is the first time that Brazil will not compete in the Women’s World Cup knock outs.
The Brazilian team was led by legendary footballer Marta. She is regarded as the best female footballer ever. This was her last World Cup and she will be forced to retire without ever lifting the trophy. She was seen crying after the match.
The Jamaicans can now dream of making a deep run into the tournament.
