Reggae Warriors Have Uphill Battle In Their Bid To Qualify For Second World Cup

Jamaica has to compete for two spots in order to qualify for 2026 Rugby World Cup

Romeo Monteith; the head coach of the Reggae Warriors, said that they are working on securing a spot in the upcoming Rugby League World Cup. He revealed that his team is willing to do anything in their power although they know that it will be difficult task.
In 2022, Monteith led Jamaica when they made their debut appearance in the finals. The tournament was made up of 16 countries and it was hosted by England.
Unfortunately, the finalists of the 2026 World Cup will be reduced to 10. The competition to get these spots will be very stiff because there are only two positions remaining. The competition will be held in Australia.
The Jamaicans will be hoping to make every game count.
The last tournament’s quarter-finalists — Lebanon, Papua New Guinea, Australia, Fiji, England, Tonga, Samoa and New Zealand have secured their spots. The remaining two spots will be decided at the end of 2025 through a round-robin tournament. The top two nations from this competition will take the two spots.
Jamaica will be competing against the Cook Islands, the winner of a contest between Ukraine, Wales, France and Serbia; and South Africa.
Monteith, who took over in 2012, said that he is expecting “an uphill battle when it comes to the qualification process.” He expressed disappointment in the reduction of teams. However, he believes that the Reggae Warriors can win if their best players are on the field.
