Asafa Powell
Asafa Powell is a retired Jamaican sprinter who specialized in the 100-meter dash. He was born on November 23, 1982 in Spanish Town, Jamaica. Powell began his athletic career at a young age, competing in local track and field events in Jamaica. He quickly made a name for himself as a rising star in the sprinting world, setting a new national record in the 100-meter dash in 2001 at the age of 18.
In 2002, Powell competed in his first major international event, the Commonwealth Games, where he won a bronze medal in the 100-meter dash. The following year, he competed in the World Championships and set a new personal best time of 9.91 seconds in the 100-meter dash, finishing in fourth place.
Powell continued to improve over the next few years, setting a new personal best time of 9.77 seconds in 2005 and winning his first major international title at the World Championships that year. He went on to win the 100-meter dash at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and the 2007 World Championships.
Powell also competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he finished in fifth place in the 100-meter dash. He retired from competitive racing in 2017, holding the record for the most sub-10 second runs in the 100-meter dash with 97.
