Jamaicans will be happy to know that Roje Stona has been invited to an NFL training camp. The discus throw athlete made a name for himself when he won a gold medal in the recent Olympic Games.
This development means that he will move closer to his dream of playing in USA’s National Football League. The Jamaican will be involved in a 10-week camp that will also feature 14 other athletes from 14 different countries. The camp will begin in January, in Bradenton, Florida.
Stona threw 70.00m to break the Olympic Games record. This was the first time that a Jamaican athlete has won a gold medal in an Olympic throwing event.
The NFL is hoping to recruit talented individuals who have the potential to play American Football at the highest level. They are doing this by creating opportunities that can include individuals who live outside USA.
Stona attended both University of Arkansas and Clemson University but he has never participated in a competitive football game. However, he captured the attention of NFL scouts while doing football drills in the University of Arkansas.
Sheldon Clarke, a second Jamaican, could also get a chance to audition for NFL scouts in Florida. He is an ex Munro College football (gridiron) representative.
According to sources, the NFL scouts were impressed by the two Jamaicans’ explosiveness. The NFL-IPP programme will continue looking for international talents who can hack it in the National Football League.
