The two sprinters will be competing in a star-studded 100m lineup
Jamaican sprinter Elaine Thompson-Herah is expected to compete in the Prefontaine Classic event. The Jamaican Olympic champion will be involved in a heavyweight clash against world champion Sha’Carri Richardson. The bitter rivals will be competing in a 100m race that will happen in the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon.
Thompson-Herah came into the event as a late inclusion because the organizers wanted to spice things up. It’s therefore not surprising that the event has received increased interest since Thompson-Herrah was included. It’s important to note that Richardson will be competing on home soil.
The 100m race will also include other fierce competitors. They include Marie-Josee Ta Lou-Smith, Africa’s fastest woman and Julien Alfred, world 60m indoor champion. However, most spectators will undoubtedly focus on superstars Thompson-Herah and Richardson.
In the past events, Thompson-Herah has had success while competing in Eugene. In 2023, the 200m and 100m Olympic champion recorded a season’s best time of 10.79s.
In 2021, she clocked a time of 10.54 in the 100m distance. This was followed by a time of 10.79 seconds in 2022.
This will be Thompson-Herah’s first race in the current season. She will be using this race to build momentum for her Olympic title defence. She will have a rematch with Richardson when they meet at the Paris Olympics. The summer event will happen on 26th July, 2024.
Richardson has had a slow start to her season, she secured a second place finish in Xiamen and a third place in Suzhou. She was competing in the 200m category in both races. The Prefontaine Classic will provide her with her first opportunity to compete in 100m in the current year.
