Usain Bolt has lost his father, Wellesley Bolt. He died yesterday after suffering from a “long illness”.

Over the years, Wellesley Bolt was seen at events where his son was competing. He was always accompanied by his wife Jennifer.

The family has received condolences from the Honourable Olivia Grange; the minister of the Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport.

The minister described the senior Bolt as the strength of his family.

Grange made the following statement.

She said: “Bolt became a legendary sprinter because he was raised by two strong parents. Wellesley is a father who always showed unconditional love to his son. Nothing beats a supportive family.

“Wellesley and his wife have always been Usain’s chief cheerleaders and chief motivators. They brought support and stability into his life,” Grange continued.

“I found him to be a passionate father who would do anything his family. He brought strength to his family.

“We know Usain Bolt as a very successful athlete but his success can be attributed to the values that were instilled by his parents.

“I would like to send a warm message to Usain, Jennifer and the rest of their family. We have lost a great Jamaican man,” she said.

“I urge them to be comforted by the memory of a lovable man. I know that’s it is a difficult time but we can also celebrate the good things that he did.”
