Lloyd is expected to publicly accept the award in Grenada in July
The Windies are set to honor former captain Clive Lloyd with the Order Of Caricom award. LLoyd enjoyed a legendary career as the captain of the West Indies team. This award is the highest accolade within the regional trading bloc.
The 79-year-old former captain enjoyed a West Indies career that lasted from 1966-1985. The Caricom heads of government honored him with the award during their 46th regular meeting. The meeting happened in Guyana, Lloyd’s birthplace. This recognition places Lloyd among the elite legends of cricket. Some of the other legends that have received this prestigious award include Brian Lara, Sir Vivian Richards and Sir Garfield Sobers.
The 6’4 LLoyd is affectionately referred to as ‘The Big Cat’ because of his dominant presence on and off the field. Cricket purists have praised him for being an exceptional leader. He will be remembered for elevating the WI team towards success when he captained the team between 1974 to 1985.
He was the leader of the legendary WI team that won the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in two separate occasions. The team also secured a unbeaten streak in Test matches. These achievements are a testament to his inspirational leadership and strategic acumen.
Lloyd also boasts of a spot in the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame, he was inducted in 2009. He has been celebrated for punctuating for more than 7,500 runs in Test cricket.
